Cheesy Baked Pumpkin Pasta with Kale

cheesy pumpkin pasta

This recipe calls for canned pumpkin, but the small pumpkins we receive in the CSA can be roasted and pureed to use in this dish. Perhaps we can sub the kale in this recipe for the greens as well.

Hi Members,

Our last week of the fall season is here! Thank you for another great season of community surrounded by fresh fruit and vegetables. If you don't want to lose the bounty of local produce throughout the rest of fall, winter and spring, be sure to sign up for our Winter Share. Details are below.

And if you haven't had a chance to do your final volunteer shift yet, we have two spots open in the 2pm-4pm time slot tomorrow. Stop by if you can help out!

Orders are due this Wednesday, November 7 for our 11/20 Market Day!

We're excited to have Lewis Waite Farm and City Saucery meat, fish, dairy, bread, pantry items and tomato sauces available for our November Market Day. Orders and payments are due by November 7th. Pickup will occur at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, between 4-8pm.

Place your market day order here!

The registration deadline is this Thursday, November 8 for the 2018-2019 Winter Share!

Winter 2018-2019 will continue with Tuesday evening pick-ups from 4pm-8pm in our same location at St. Mark's in the Bowery.

We will have 9 pickups between November and May: Nov 20, Dec 11, Jan 22, Feb 12, March 5, March 26, April 16, May 7, and May 14.

Rather than our typical vegetable share with add-ons, the winter CSA features several "mixed" share types to choose from: Meat share, Lacto-ovo share, and Vegan share. All three shares cost $390. The deadline to sign up and all payments must be received by is November 8.

To sign up, head over to our website now!

Please email us at info@washingtonsquarecsa.com if you would like more information.

This is the last newsletter before winter CSA starts…enough about weather, it is fall for sure but temps remain somewhat mild with no snow yet. We need that to continue harvesting storage crops. Thank you for supporting our farm and we look forward to having you again as members in 2019. We are looking at new CSA models and approaches and will keep you posted.

We are still pulling in storage crops from fields as we have been doing the last few weeks. In addition, the guys are going to rebuild some of our antiquated seedling houses where we produce all the seedlings that get transplanted outside. We are also planting more crops for spring CSAs and markets, including lettuce, leeks, scallions, and radishes. Next week is also Haifa and I’s last week in the markets and we will be at the farm preparing for next season and will go overseas to visit parents and relatives.

Vegetable of the week: Potatoes
The homely potato can be a very nutritious and tasty vegetable and is used in all major cuisines of the world from the gnocchi to the pakora. We love to take all the colored potatoes and make French fries but using olive oil. Much of the anti-cancer nutrients in the potato is in the skin. It is said that the high elevation potatoes of Peru contain a nutrient that helps people in higher elevation cope better with lower oxygen. We grow many verities and will be trying some new experimental ones from Cornell in 2019.

Thank you,
Zaid Kurdieh
