WEEKLY RECIPE INSPIRATION

Sweet and Spicy Grilled Summer Squash

summer squash

July means it's time to grill! The crosshatch pattern you make on the squash in this recipe isn’t just for show (even though it does look cool)! It allows for the salt to fully penetrate the squash and also draws out some of the excess water so that the sweet, tangy glaze can be fully absorbed.

NEWS FROM THE FARM

farmThe heat wave continued for most of the week which stressed both our humans and our plants. The bounty became available on the week many are out of town. The fall planting continues with many of the crops being planted on our South New Berlin property where plowing up new ground turned up shale. We have also been scrambling to get our cold storage up and running to try to hold crops for a few days while we find a market for them. This time of year, is the busiest on the farm as we plant, harvest, tend, and market. In about 1 month most of the planting will subside giving us a bit of breathing room.

Featured Vegetable
Beans: While this is a large category we are only going to talk about the “green bean” type as opposed to the lima, cow pea, and multitude of others in the “legume family”. We grow both bush beans and pole beans and specialize in growing mostly pole beans and have been working with breeders to develop new verities and have one on the cusp of becoming a commercial variety in the next few years. For more on the health benefits and some issues with beans go to Medical News Today's article on green beans
