Welcome to the blog.

Hello CSA Members - Old and New!

Washington Square CSA is pleased to announce that we are officially open for Fall Share Registration! Fall 2017 will continue with Tuesday evening pick-ups from 4pm-8pm in our same location at St. Mark's in the Bowery.

The fall season will kick off on Tuesday, September 12th. Distribution will be every week for 9 weeks. To sign up, head over to our website now! Please let us know right away if you encounter any issues with the site.

The deadline to sign up and all payments must be received by Sunday August 27. THIS IS 1 WEEK FROM TODAY AND SPACE IS LIMITED, SO SIGN UP ASAP!

 Frequently Asked Questions (and answers!)

  • Are add-ons available for the fall? We are excited to offer weekly eggs and fruit shares for the fall season! Unfortunately, we are not able to offer our other add-ons with the fall share, but we will have several Market Days in the fall, at which times you can make a one-time purchase of many of our other add-on items. You can also check our facebook page to see if any current members are looking to sell or split some of their add-ons. (Feel free to post a request on the page as well, if there's something you're looking for!)

  • If I'm a current summer 2017 member, do I need to sign up for the fall share? Nope! Your summer share will continue through November. Fall share runs concurrently with the end of the season, and both fall and summer will receive the same items each week. The only difference is the start date.

  • If I'm a current summer member without a fruit share, can I purchase a fall fruit share? Absolutely! Just head over to our website and update your membership. (Please note: The site will also give you the option to purchase a fall veggie share – if you do so, you will receive a double share of veggies for the last 9 weeks of the season.)

  • What if I want to make changes to my other add-ons? Unfortunately, WSCSA cannot alter any of your other add-ons, nor can we cancel any shares that were paid at the start of the season. However, you can post on our facebook page if there is a share you no longer want, and see if any other members are interested in purchasing the remainder of the share from you!

  • I saw WSCSA is offering a cool tote bag this season, how can I get one? You're in luck! If you are a current member, you can purchase one between now and August 27 by updating your membership. If you are just joining us now, it's also available as an add-on when you purchase your share!

Please remember that Washington Square CSA is run entirely by volunteers and relies on the participation of every member to ensure our success! Please make sure you fulfill your workshift requirement, and email us at info@washingtonsquarecsa.com if you have any questions.

We hope to see you this fall!

Cheers,
The WSCSA Core Committee

THIS WEEK IN FOOD TALK

When the Prescription is a Recipe

Eating healthy by cooking at home has always been a common recommendation from your family doctor, but recently, many doctors are taking it a step further and teaching their patients how to cook. This New York Times article profiles several doctors who are taking steps to share how cooking at home can cure many ailments, even those that don't seem diet related.

Cooking classes and demos, food pantries, blogs, even food-centric pediatrics practices are some of the creative ways doctors are taking their prescriptions away from the pharmacy and into the kitchen.

THIS WEEK IN FOOD TALK

The Future of the Grocery Store

At the Food Forward summit in Washington DC last week, Food Dive sat down with two food futurists to discuss what's in store for the future of grocery shopping and what trends are already starting to arise.

Some predictions: people will take a more active role in what they eat, have more opportunities to interact and know more about how food impacts their bodies. So how does the place we shop respond to these changing goals?

THIS WEEK IN FOOD TALK

regenerative ag

What is Regenerative Agriculture – and how can the food industry promote to consumers responsibly?

I've been hearing this new phrase in food news recently, regenerative agriculture. What does it mean? Essentially it goes further than regular organic farming practices to insure more responsible soil usage. It's been around for decades but several farmers and organizations are working to bring it to the mainstream. It's a good thing, because regenerative ag helps reduce climate change; soil fertility is proven to be directly linked to reduced CO2 in the air. But how will promoting farms and products made with regenerative ag practices contribute to label confusion? How will it compete or cooperate with organic labeled products?

eating local

Eating Local – More Than Ever – Is a Political Act

In a recent article published on Civil Eats, journalist Katherine Standefer reflects on how local eating might become a deeper, more powerful source of communal strength in a political moment when we most need it.

It's an excellent reminder of all of the great reasons to be in a CSA.

Hello WSCSA members,

A few announcements:

MARKET DAY
Today is your last chance to purchase items for the July 11 Market Day. Please submit your orders and payments by tonight. Don't miss this great chance to sample other local goods!

PLACE ORDER HERE

FRUIT SHARES
If you are a biweekly or weekly fruit share member, we were not able to cancel the first order of fruit, so it will be delivered to the Prince George CSA this Thursday, July 6.

Their pickup is from 4:30pm and 7:30pm on Thursday at The Prince George Lobby located at:

14 E. 28th Street
(between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenues)

If you cannot pick up your fruit at this time and location, please know that your fruit will be donated to a food pantry or composted. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. After tomorrow, fruit pickup will resume to it's normal time and place next Tuesday with the veggies.

Thanks!

Good Evening,

This is a friendly reminder that there will be no pick-up tomorrow, July 4, because of the holiday. The vegetable share for this week will be added to another Tuesday later in the season. However, it may not be possible to cancel our first fruit share, so we may have our fruit delivered to a nearby CSA later this week. If you have signed up for a fruit share, stay tuned for additional pickup info.

Thanks and have a great Independence Day!

nyt composting

The Final Recycling Frontier: Organics.

If you're in a CSA, chances are you'll have your fair share of food scraps piling up this summer. A recent New York Times article sheds light on the challenges of expanding composting programs in New York City. Yet NYC officials are hopeful that we'll be able to grow and adapt composting programs to reduce the amount of food waste going into landfills.

Good Afternoon,

Welcome new and returning members to another great season of local, fresh produce! It's official, our first pickup will be next Tuesday, June 13. This pickup will just be vegetables — add-ons will start the following week, and fruit will start in early July.

This year, pickups will continue at:

St. Marks Church on the Bowery
131 East 10th Street
(entrance on East 11th street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues)

Tuesdays, from 4pm to 8pm

Volunteer Shifts are open!

Our SignUp volunteer registration is now available to claim shifts! An integral aspect of the CSA is that it takes every member's efforts to make it run smoothly. For that reason, we ask that each share sign up for two volunteer shifts throughout the season.

For the time being, in order to allow people more latitude in meeting their requirement, we ask that each share sign up only for one shift. We have limited the dates to Tuesdays up to and including August 29.

That marks the half-way point of the summer season. In conjunction with opening registration for the fall season, we will expand the signup dates throughout the end of the season, and remind members to claim their second shifts.

If you become aware that these time slots simply won't work for you, please e-mail info@washingtonsquarecsa.com, and we will work together on creating a less time-specific project in order to help you meet your commitment.

Don't forget about us online!

Check out our website for loads of information about the CSA, including bios of our core team.

For insight into what’s about to begin coming each week, we have a record from last year's share on the website (What’s Fresh) that we will also update each week this season with photos, recipes, etc.

We're also on social media! Don't forget to follow our Instagram page, use the hashtag #WSCSA, or like us on Facebook to keep up with all things WSCSA!

Cheers,
