News and blog

Welcome to the blog.
Posted 11/2/2011 6:41pm by Core Committee.

Dear CSA Members,

Hey there members, a very happy November to one and all. I hope everyone survived the snow (perhaps with some delicious squash soup to warm you from last week's share) and our crash course introduction to cold weather.

As you all know from last week, the Winter Share sign up is the main thing on our radar within the Core-Committee. To give you as much lead time as possible sign up is officially OPEN, even while we are working overtime trying to find a new place to distribute. We have some great leads from the community and are hoping to have the location locked down within the week so if you are interested get those checkbooks ready! Pricing is listed below. Again, if you know you want a Winter Share now, feel free to bring a check by distribution or email us for the mailing address and we will wait to cash it until all of the details are nailed down. It's no risk and you will be one postage stamp closer to delicious, delicious vegetables all winter long.

If you are currently a fruit share-holder, my friend, you are about to be in apple heaven. Check out our facebook for an apple-idea-a-day, every day this week! To see our page just hit "Like". Not on the 'book? Here's a hint, the first link will be to the fabulous Tigress in a Jam website (great for all sorts of home preservation recipes) and it is for Apple Butter. Not a fruit share member? Greenmarkets city wide will have you covered in that department, now is the best time to buy tons of apples on the cheap.

Again, we greatly appreciate your patience and your support as we try to keep Washington Square CSA up and running. Feel free to give a shout or share an idea by emailing
wscsa-core@googlegroups.com at any time, or by chatting at distribution, there is always a Core-Committee member overseeing.

Winter Shares
We have received info from Zaid about the winter share dates! Check here for information about the winter share. Sign-up will be added to the website once we can secure a site for the distribution. The address to send checks will be different, so please wait for the official announcement. Here is what we know:
- Wednesdays (with a weather date of Thursdays)
- Tentatively: 12/14, 1/11, 2/8, 3/7, 4/4, and 5/2 (monthly deliveries)
- Ovo-lacto/Omnivore shares priced the same as last year: $320

- Vegan Frozen share
will be potentially be available again, price TBD
- Add-ons are being confirmed, we will open them as they become available.

This Week
Distribution will take place at the regularly scheduled time and place on Thursday, November 3rd from 4 - 8 pm on the Fifth Floor of the Kimmel Center. See you there!

Dear CSA Members,

Hello from the Core-Committee! We know that many of you have been chomping at the bit to secure your Winter Share, and might even be so excited about it that you are mildly annoyed you haven't been able to sign up yet. We feel ya. So here is the major update explaining our tantalizing emails about Winter Shares.

Our partnership with NYU's Kimmel center is, unfortunately, drawing to a close. Securing a new site has been our priority number one over here on the Core-Committee, and we have been working hard to reach out to community partners who might have space for us. We have some very promising leads and a lot of great feedback, however we haven't been able to finalize a site yet. We know there are a few members who might not be able to accomodate a change in the pick up site, even if it is still in the neighborhood. Since our operation is based on the trust and good faith of members and farmers, we have decided to air this issue and try to move forward as much as possible in a responsible manner. Zaid counts on our business and winter is fast arriving.

If you are certain you want to continue supporting the farm and our CSA for a winter share and feel that you can accomodate a shift in the pick up location (our parameters for potential patners are between 14th street and Canal Street), please feel free to bring a check to the next meeting or email us to receive the mailing address. Sign-up will be open on the website by the end of this week. Prices are listed below. We will refrain from depositing your check until we have confirmed a location, at which point we will also notify you. Your check will be returned to you if we are unable to find a partner to host us for the winter.

Additionally, we can only accept checks for the Ovo-Lacto and Omnivore Shares at this time. These shares are provided by Zaid, whom we are working with closely through this transition. All add-ons and the vegan Winter Sun Farms share are made possible through other providers, thereby adding another layer of coordination that we don't feel comfortable taking on until we have our location established. Once we nail down a place, we will do everything in our power to make these shares available. Lastly, all payments must be made by check, for now, to avoid a potential logistical nightmare trying to do refunds through PayPal.

We really appreciate your patience and understanding through this. All of the volunteers on the core committee over here are working hard to ensure a future for the Washington Square CSA. Please take this opportunity to let us know if you have any leads on a site that might be able to host us, NYU or not. Our strength as a CSA comes from the engagement and goodwill of our members; truly this kind of cooperation is what a CSA is all about! Give us a shout with any and all of your ideas.

Dear CSA Members,

Our Summer and Fall shares are coming soon to an end, but there are a few weeks of delicious veggies still to go! Tomorrow is our 18th week of 22. Your core-committee is working hard to coordinate the winter share and you will be the first to hear once the official sign up is open. More details on that topic reiterated below. Also please check your schedules

Winter Shares
We have received info from Zaid about the winter share dates! Check here for information about the winter share. Sign-up will be added to the website once we can secure a site for the distribution. The address to send checks will be different, so please wait for the official announcement. Here is what we know:

- Vegan Frozen share
will be available again, price TBD
- Add-ons are being confirmed, we will open them as they become available.

Work-Shifts
Tomorrow we are really short on morning people. If you have a flexible schedule (not a nine-to-five job) please try to come by tomorrow morning! The 9:30 shift is very important and there is currently only one person signed up for it.

If you are available to work the new 7-9 shift, please email the evening coordinator Reneice renjc102@gmail.com to arrange it. There are just a few weeks left to get your volunteer shifts in!

Farm Visit
Zaid has offered October 30th as a date where CSA's can come to the NJ farm for a visit. This is not the farm in Norwich, so it's closer and it is the newer farm that Zaid has poured a lot of energy into in the last few years. Again, please respond to this email if you are interested, we are trying to get a sense of how many people might want to take advantage of this.

Social Media
Check out Washington Square CSA on Facebook to share recipes, hear updates, discuss food issues, etc! Just go to our page and click "like" to see any updates.

This Week
Distribution will take place at the regularly scheduled time and place on Thursday, October 20th from 4 - 8 pm on the Fifth Floor of the Kimmel Center. See you there!

Dear CSA Members,

Hi everyone, welcome to week 17. We always commit to 20 weeks of produce, but Zaid has confirmed that we will go 22, his way of saying thank you for your support over the season. So remember, CSA goes until November 17th, giving you fresh fall vegetables for your Thanksgiving dinner! A few announcements this week:

Work-Shifts
In response to overwhelming need on behalf of our CSA site coordinator, we will be adding a 7-9pm work shift for the next few weeks. This should provide an opportunity for those who still need to complete their two work shifts but have limited availability. Thanks to those of you who have already completed your work-shift hours, we understand that everyone is quite busy and we deeply appreciate the effort you have made to accomodate this responsibility.

The new 7-9pm shift will be an additional hand on deck for the clean-up process. It is very important that we  keep our space in Kimmel as clean as is possible, the building accomodates a ton of student activity and adding hundreds of pounds of veggies each week to the mix is no small deal. The sign up for those slots should be available next week, if you can work that shift TODAY, please email Reneice, the evening site coordinator.

Also, as you can see below, we are short-handed next week in the morning. Morning shifts and late shifts are the most important, so if you are available, please, please sign up!

Farm Visit
Zaid has offered October 30th as a date where CSA's can come to the NJ farm for a visit. This is not the farm in Norwich, so it's closer and it is the newer farm that Zaid has poured a lot of energy into in the last few years. Core members are a bit overextended right now, but if people are interested and think they can go that day, please respond and we will see if there is sufficient member interest and availability!

Winter Shares
We have received info from Zaid about the winter share dates! Check here for information about the winter share. Sign-up will be added to the website once we can secure a site for the distribution. The address to send checks will be different, so please wait for the official announcement. Here is what we know:

Dear CSA Members,

Hello everyone. Just a few exciting updates for this week from your CSA. The first of them is for all fruit share holders: this week you will be getting a DOUBLE share! This is to make up for missed shares earlier in the season, your patience sweetly rewarded. Make sure to bring extra bags. On a similar note, there will be honey and chicken this week for those of you with shares. See below for the full add-on list.

Also, for those of you who are looking at the calendar and lamenting that our summer share will soon draw to a close, take heart, winter share info is on its way! Information about prices, dates, etc, is currently being tabulated so keep an eye out for that in the weeks to come. If you are interested in reading more about the winter share, check out the section on our CSA website about it and you can even see a monthly breakdown of each delivery in '09-'10.

Distribution will take place at the regularly scheduled time and place on Thursday, October 6th from 4 - 8 pm on the Fifth Floor of the Kimmel Center. See you there!

Feel free to email any of the core committee with thoughts, questions, comments, concerns, or just to say hello,
wscsa-core@googlegroups.com. Keep rockin' and, of course, eating vegetables.

Best,

Dear CSA Members,

We have arrived at week fifteen! The harbingers of fall have started to arrive in these last few weeks such as sweet potatoes and apples, I hope everyone is enjoying them immensely. Just a friendly reminder that if you have any great recipes or experiences in the kitchen feel free to add them to the conversation on our Facebook page. It is there as a resource, for those inclined to use it, and we love hearing from you all! Last week we posted a video by Perennial Plate which poignantly captures the dilemma many upstate farms are dealing with in the aftermath of Irene, and how the CSA model helps them. Check it out here: Perennial Plate "After the Flood".

Special thanks this week thanks to Chole for submitting some recipe suggestions to get through the windfall of plums from last week. Check them out at Buttered Bread Blog!

Lastly, a HUGE thank you to everyone, the work-shift slots for the next few weeks look gorgeously full. Great work, everyone. As always,
to check out the current sign up sheet, check this link. We have also listed below the sign up for this week and next.

Distribution will take place at the regularly scheduled time and place on Thursday, September 29th from 4 - 8 pm on the Fifth Floor of the Kimmel Center. See you there!

Dear CSA Members,

Hello, and welcome to week 14 of our CSA. Hopefully everyone is enjoying the fallish feeling in the air. After a few tumultuous weeks, everything should be relatively back to normal for this week's pickup, but we will keep you posted with any updates we receive.

Many of you remember at the begining of the season we did not get fruit right away. Fruit share holders (weekly and biweekly) bring LOTS of bags this week, the farm has notified us that this is your fruit make-up week. There should be a lot!

Distribution will take place at the regularly scheduled time and place on Thursday, September 22nd from 4 - 8 pm on the Fifth Floor of the Kimmel Center. See you there!

Work-Shifts
As you may have gathered from our weekly emails encouraging volunteers, we really, really count on everyone showing up for a volunteer shift at some point during the season. Volunteers run the show around here and your efforts are greatly appreciated. With that in mind, please go sign up for your shift if you have not yet done so! Or, if you have already signed up but feel like being a really stand-up CSA member, get crazy and sign up again!

Remember, if you do not sign-up and complete your work-shift requirements before the end of the season you will be charged a fee and will be unable to sign up for winter season until that fee is paid. We really hate to have to do that, but the AM Site Coordinator has struggled many mornings attempting to unload hundreds of pounds of produce with little or no help. That cannot happen. We will be notifiying members of their work-shift status in the next few weeks. Remember, the most important shifts are the AM shift and the last PM shift. If you want to volunteer for those shifts and are able to lift and move heavy boxes, even if the shift is "full" email the site coordinators, they always need more help!

To check out the current sign up sheet, check this link. We have also listed below the sign up for this week and next. Thank you for your participation!

Dear CSA Members,

Thank you for your flexibility and patience last week! We were glad that the CSA truck was able to get out of Norwich NY and get down here to make the delivery. It would have been a huge loss for the farm. We are still waiting for a full report from Zaid as to how the farm is doing and what we can expect over the next few weeks. He's a bit busy, as you can imagine.

Distribution will take place at the regularly scheduled time and place on Thursday, September 15th from 4 - 8 pm on the Fifth Floor of the Kimmel Center. See you there!

Announcements
Also, Just Food was scheduled to come to put up a table and talk to members about the Just Food CSA Network at the distribution site this Thursday. If you may have noticed, when you signed up for the CSA, you were given an option to increase your donation to Just Food. For each share, a tiny fee is paid to Just Food - a really tiny amount for the support we get in exchange! In light of the urgent efforts to support devastated CSA farms, we have not received confirmation from them that this will still be happening, I'll send out an update if I hear back before tomorrow!

Fall Shareholders
Don't forget to come pick up your FALL SHARE this week!

Work-Shifts
It appears that many of you noticed the desperate call that Oliver, AM Site Coordinator put out this week regarding work-shifts. Many of the previously empty slots are filling up for the next few weeks. Thanks! The next two weeks sign-ups (as of right now) are below, check and make sure you can complete any shift you have signed up for. These work-shifts are so important; they are the only way that the CSA can function.

Work-shift sign-up, as always, is available online and you can access it through this link. Thank you for your participation!

One more thing, I've chatted with a few of you about getting involved further with the CSA. If work-shifts aren't enough and you are interested in joining the core committee and giving even more of your time to the CSA, you can always reply to this email to contact me.

Many thanks,

Dear CSA Members,

After speaking with the Farm, the decision has been made to postpone our delivery to Friday.  All of the Thursday CSAs from Norwich are in the same situation.  Only the day will change, our distribution will still run from 4 - 8 pm at the Kimmel Center.

As you can imagine, we will need a lot of volunteer support is order to make this happen.  If you were signed up for a volunteer shift for today, please email either the Morning Site Coordinator Oliver (ojd202@nyu.edu) or the Evening Site Coordinator Reneice (renjc102@gmail.com) to let them know if you are still able to volunteer on Friday.

If anyone else is available to help out, your support would be greatly appreciated.  This is a big job and we will need your help to make it happen smoothly.  Please reply to this email if you can help!

As a reminder - distribution will now take on Friday, September 9th from 4 - 8 pm on the Fifth Floor of the Kimmel Center.

Many thanks,

Dear CSA Members,

We received a note from Zaid, our farmer at Norwich Meadows Farm:

"
We have major flooding going on in our county and in surrounding counties...Mark left early this morning to deliver Thursdays CSA but could not find a route out. We will keep you posted as we assess the situation during the day."

As you know, the ground was saturated from all the rain we have gotten over the last few weeks. We will tell you as soon as we hear anything from the farm about whether there will be a make-up pick-up tomorrow or what to expect.

Best,
Dez
