News and blog

Welcome to the blog.
Posted 8/31/2011 11:08pm by Core Committee.

Dear CSA Members,

Hello! Can you believe it's Labor Day weekend already? I hope that you have enjoyed these summer months. At least here at the Washington Square CSA the summer is only half over. This is week 11 for deliveries and it's looking like a great one. Reneice, the evening site coordinator, has not made it back from Costa Rica because of hurricane canceled flights. We will be doing our best to keep the distribution running smoothly. Don't forget to bring your own bags!

Fruit shares is only weekly, while milk, yogurt, cheese, granola, beef, eggs and butter are weekly and biweekly. Next week will bring the infrequent items of chicken, maple syrup, honey, and tempeh!

Important Reminder about Volunteer Time Slots

The morning shift has had to be been changed to accommodate the farm's delivery schedule.

The new time for the morning volunteer shift is 9:30 - 11:30 am - please note that this shift now begins 30 minutes earlier.  Please review the work-shift sign up and be sure that you can fulfill any work shift you are scheduled for. If you must change your workshift as a result of the time change or for any other reason, please contact morning site coordinator Oliver Dobbs at ojd202@nyu.edu.

VERY Important Volunteers Needed!

Thank you to everyone who responded to the call for volunteers today, we appreciate your hard work and dedication to make keep this CSA running efficiently! Please, if you are not on vacation, please volunteer during the next few weeks. I know that September means big changes for a lot of people, but please keep in mind that there are many critical time slots awaiting volunteers. Check your schedule. We need help, especially for the morning shift from 9:30 - 11:30 am (with the new time) in the coming weeks. Please sign up using the work-shift sign up today!

With best,

Desdemona Penascino
Newsletter Editor (back from vacation!)

Hello CSA Members,

Does anyone else feel like they're last ones left in town?  If you aren't on vacation yet, I look forward to seeing you at distribution tomorrow!  Renenice, our lovely afternoon site coordinator, is still on vacation, so I will be filling in again tomorrow.  You may have noticed that we are working hard to have everyone initial by their names instead of just checking people off.  This extra step allows us to better monitor add-ons and make sure that no one is missing out on anything!  Extra patience is appreciated as this will ultimately help distribution to run smoother.

Fruit shares are both weekly and biweekly, while milk, yogurt, cheese, granola, eggs and herbs are all weekly only.  Please find the full share list below these important announcements.

Important change to Volunteer Time Slots

The morning shift has been changed to accommodate the farm's delivery schedule.  As many of you know, our farm is in Norwich, NY which is 185 miles away.  It takes the driver about three and a half hours each way to bring us our shares each week!  In order to make all of their deliveries, our time slot has been moved earlier and so our volunteer time slot must be adjusted accordingly.

Volunteers Needed!

There are many time slots still available, especially for the morning shift from 9:30 - 11:30 am (with the new time) in the coming weeks. Our CSA depends on the hard work of volunteers to run smoothly, so please sign up using the work-shift sign up today!  We are already halfway through the season, so make sure you've signed up to fulfill your volunteer responsibilities.

With best,

Megan Holly

Hello CSA Members,

Zaid has been busy and we haven't heard what will be in the share tomorrow yet, so it will be a surprise when it arrives.  We had cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, greens, peppers and basil last week and I would expect more of those again this week.  The good news is that the new scales have arrived so hopefully more scales will ensure a smooth pick up for everyone tomorrow.

Fruit shares are weekly only and milk, yogurt, cheese, granola, eggs and herbs are all both weekly and biweekly.  We should also have deliveries of butter and ground beef if you've purchased that.

Lastly, our lovely afternoon site coordinator Reneice is on vacation for the next two distributions, so Core Members will be helping out.  Any extra patience is appreciated and this is a great opportunity to meet some of the other faces of the CSA.

With best,

Hello CSA Members,

In our News from the Farm this week it's hot.  But then again, if you've been in New York you probably already knew that!  With all of this heat, we are likely to be receiving some of our produce ahead of schedule.  Bring extra bags this week to take everything home with you.

On the subject of bags, please do remember that while occasionally our volunteers bring extras, we are not guaranteed to have them.  Bags are your own responsibility.

Our core committee met last week and we are working hard to streamline the distribution process for everyone.  Add-ons are particularly confusing and we'll be including the schedule for upcoming weeks in the newsletters from now on.  Please let us know if you have additional ideas for making the distribution process smoother, we'd love to hear them - just reply to this email.

Additionally, we are currently scheduling the August Core Meeting.  If you're interested in attending and learning more about joining the Core Commitee, please let us know.

Best,

Megan Holly

ABOUT CROP-TO-CUP:

crop_to_cup

Crop to Cup Coffee was born out of its founders’ work in the nonprofit sector in Uganda and a desire by entrepreneurial coffee farmers to connect to markets of more reliable and more sustainable coffee buyers.

Our mission is to serve roasters, coffee brands, the food service industry and coffee lovers in their quest to enjoy high quality coffee from unique and sustainable origins at a fair price. All of our products, services and projects operate with quality, the environment and social equality as their driving forces.

With sustainable economic development in mind, we aim to bring high quality relationship coffees not only to the top-tier of the coffee industry, but to the entire coffee consuming community, where farmers can better access the long term relationships and scale to achieve true progress and lasting change.

Fifth CSA Distribution:

Hello Summer Share CSA Members!

The fifth pick-up is tomorrow, Thursday 7/21. We hope you are settling into the season. The Core Committee would like to take a few moments to explain a few things that have been going on at the CSA and thank you for your patience while we go through these growing pains.

You may have noticed that we are working out a few kinks this season. Our longtime Program Coordinator, Andrea Aldana, moved away from NYC to pursue farming in Cape Cod. We are all so excited for her and will keep the CSA members updated about her new life
.

With her departure, members of the core committee have stepped up to take on new roles and responsibilities. We are all volunteers who give a lot of our time and energy to make the CSA great. We are all learning and trying our best, so please, let us know if you have suggestions or if you want to be involved in this exciting time for the CSA. The Core Commitee will be hosting an open meeting in the next few weeks, if you are interested in CSA management or one of our other projects (EBT/Food Stamp accessibility, composting, CSA events, etc) you are more than welcome to attend. The date will be announced soon.

CSA is for building community and inspiring that community to support a farm to have a direct impact on our food system. It is an honor to serve this great CSA and I hope that you all feel that you have a voice in how it is run.

Thank you!

- Your Core Committee

NEWS FROM THE FARM:
I'm down at the farm in NJ today trying to run things remotely as the guys pack for CSA in Norwich. The weather continues to be brutally hot and that is affecting things like greens and humans. In fact, most plants do not like this extreme heat. Still waiting for three Egyptians to arrive and we are short-handed in the fields. The guys are doing their best to keep up with everything and by in large they have been able to do so.

You are getting a substantial share as the heat accelerates the maturity of plants and and in some cases they come all at once or over a shorter harvest window than planned; if we later experience a loss or shortage because of this you will receive less in future shares. Rest assured you are getting a great deal compared to shopping at the farmers market.

The farmers market value of the share for this week is at least $21. For expensive crops like beans and broccoli, we give 1-3 CSAs a week and we make sure that all CSA’s get some over a 2-3 week period. Mark is back from Wisconsin delivering farm share shares today. Chris retired from teaching and is with us full time now and I bet he is saying what did I get myself into.

REMINDER: WORK SHIFT 1 HAS BEEN CHANGED TO BE 1 HOUR EARLIER

This is a reminder to members that Work Shift 1 has been moved 1 hour earlier. Norwich Meadows Farm changed our delivery time for this season. Because of this change, we must shift the morning work schedule from 11-1 to 10 AM - 12 PM.

Unloading the truck is a big job and we appreciate the willingness of members to contribute to the functioning of the CSA by working these difficult shifts. This change is now reflected in the Work-shift sign-up
spreadsheet.

Please check the spreadsheet and make sure that you are still available to work at the time you are signed up for. Please reply to this email if you need to change your work-shift for this week.

Thank you for your hard work! The Work Shift Slots are filled for this week and we appreciate your help!

Fourth CSA Distribution:

Hello Summer Share CSA Members!

The fourth pick-up is tomorrow, Thursday 7/14. The farm has informed us that fruit shares begin this week! YAY! This week will be both Bi-Weekly and Weekly shares and next week will be the WEEKLY shares only.

Because of the late start,
our farmer, Zaid, said that we will make up for the lag by doubling up later in the season, when there are more varieties of fresh fruits available. Also, Zaid has been updating the Farm's Facebook more regularly, see his note in the News From the Farm section.

Last chance to sign up for coffee is this week! If you are interested in ordering coffee or tempeh, reply to this email and we will work it out.

- The Core Committee

IMPORTANT POLICY COMMUNICATION:

Washington Square CSA promotes and encourages its members to split shares with their friends and family.  It is important to realize, however, that if you are subdividing a share there is still only one share registered with the CSA.  Our site coordinators and volunteers are unable to keep track of who is taking what or how much from your share or add ons. Subdividing your share is entirely your responsibility.

To clarify, your share can only be picked up at one time. All members can come at the same time and split at the site, or one member can pick up the share and divide it. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause people, but it's to ensure that shares are distributed smoothly and fairly.

Please reply to this email if you have any questions!

WORK SHIFTS

Members, there is an important change in the works for the early work shift. Norwich Meadows Farm changed our delivery time and The deliveries from Norwich Meadows will be arriving between 10 and 10:30 for the rest of the summer. As such, we must change the morning work shift from 11-1 to 10-12. The day site coordinator has had to unload the truck alone each week, which is something that is a big part of what members contribute to the functioning of the CSA. This change will be reflected in the Work-shift sign-up spreadsheet, so please check it and make sure that you are still available. This week, if you are scheduled for Shift 1 and can come at 10 am, please do. If you cannot come until 11 that is fine, we still want you to come and help.

Third CSA Distribution:

Hello Summer Share CSA Members!

I hope you are enjoying the first few deliveries of produce! The Third pick-up is tomorrow, Thursday 7/7. The farm has informed us that due to a cool and rainy season start, fruit shares will not begin until probably the week of 7/11. It's normal for fruit shares to start a little later that veggies due to different growing seasons.

Some people inquired about wanting to sign-up for some of the add-on items that we get from the farm. Unfortunately, we asked Zaid and he confirmed that he cannot add orders beyond the share sign-up deadline. However, the core group is trying to work out logistics for a market day, where Zaid will fill specific orders and bring them to the site. Stay tuned for information on that. It's not too late to sign up for shares of delicious homemade Tempeh or Fair Trade Coffee.

- The Core Committee

Hello Washington Square CSA Members,

Our second pick-up of the summer is fast approaching - this Thursday from 4 - 8 pm at the Kimmel Center.  Make sure to bring those plastic bags with you!

According to the farm, we expect to have
Lettuce, Fava Beans, Squash, Greens, Kohlrabi, Broccoli Rabe and Mint on Thursday.  We are always looking for great ideas about how to use your produce, so if you’ve made something delicious please feel free to pass along the recipe to the core committee (you can just reply to this email).  We will be sure to include those suggestions in our next newsletter!  I’ll be making pesto with this week's mint, some basil and leftover garlic scapes from last week.  I’m also hoping to have leftover mint for mojitos!

Some members have also been asking about signing up for add-ons, particularly butter, milk and fruit.  We are currently discussing this with our farmers and will let everyone know as soon as we have a final answer.

Don’t forget to sign up for your workshift – they’re an important part of how the CSA runs.
All of our members are required to complete four hours of workshifts per season. If you do not complete your workshift, you will be billed a penalty of $15 hourly. All of the workshifts are available for sign up online here.

Last but not least, the annual farm trip has been postponed to later in the summer due to other commitments at the Farm.  As soon as we have more information, we will let you know as this is a great opportunity to meet your farmer and see Norwich Meadows in action.  Stay tuned for additional details!

IMPORTANT RSVP FOR THE FARM TRIP:

Hello Summer Share CSA Members!

The Washington Square CSA is set to have our first distribution Next Thursday 6/23. We are all excited to get this going for the season and can't wait to meet the new members.

To get the season going right, we are organizing a FARM TRIP!! Do you want to see where your delicious produce comes from, learn about their farming practices and philosophies, and get OUTSIDE in this beautiful spring weather?
Where: Norwich Meadows Farms (Norwich NY)
When: June 25, 2011 (Saturday)
What: Farm bus trip!
Who: You do not need to be a member to attend, children and families are welcome.
You will need to bring lunch, comfortable clothes, water, sunscreen, and a smile.

Details: Pick-up will be in the morning on Saturday from a central location in the city and we will return to the city late Saturday night. It's a long drive, but it's the drive your farmer makes every week to bring you your CSA produce!

We are hoping to be able to visit Evan's Farm Creamery while we are up there to meet the cows who produce that amazing yogurt!

We are looking for the cheapest way to rent transportation in order to make this a really reasonable trip, but we need some help from you in order to do this. First: we need a headcount! Please, if you are considering going, fill out this RSVP form online by SUNDAY 6/19, it will give us a rough count of the number of spaces and what size of van we need to rent. The closer we are to the number the easier it will be to estimate costs.

Even if you are NOT thinking about going, please fill out the form because it will help us to plan the next trip and also help us get an accurate headcount.

Kick-Off Event!
Have questions about how the CSA works, distribution logistics, or how to get more involved with the Core Committee? At the first distribution (June 23) we will be hosting a kick-off event! At a location in the same bulding as the distribution we will have some of our producers giving demos, samples, and members of the core committee available to answer questions.
