NEWS FROM THE FARM

pumpkin

This week we continue to prepare our storage trailers for storing over wintered crops such as potatoes, carrots, beets, celery root, etc. The guys are also continuing to cleanup from summer crops and weed fall harvested crops such as watermelon and black radishes. We are also planting crops such as leeks and onions for overwintering.

Outside we will be planting some radish and short-term lettuces and continue to harvest Jerusalem Artichokes and Sweet Potatoes. Haifa and I are headed to Farm Aid (Concert by Willie Nelson and other artists) in CT next Saturday to participate in spreading awareness about the plight of NY and US farmers. Thank you for your support.

Thanks,

NEWS FROM THE FARM

What a relief…. fall temperatures alas for the whole week and sunshine forecasted for entire week. It has been a mixed bag this past week with nice weather but with morning fog which is beautiful but destructive as in the mist lurks fungus spores.

Our new farm property in South New Berlin is in a deep valley and the fog sits in the valley for much of the morning when low temperatures combine with the fungus spores and fog to create the perfect storm. We are harvesting winter squash as well as sweet potatoes. The sweet potato yields this year are a perfect indicator of how hot it has been. Unfortunately, our ginger crop was a complete failure this year. It was ravaged by a disease that we are trying to figure out. We are in the home stretch…summer winding down fast and we hope we have a long stable fall to help recapture some lost sales due to the summer heat.

Thanks,
Norwich Meadows Farm

THIS WEEK IN FOOD NEWS

bees

No news from the farm this week, so here's an enlightening article about how farms are strategizing against bee losses:

Plan Bee: The Rise of Alternative Pollinators

The honeybee has been the dominant pollinator for decades but is now is threatened by pesticides, pathogens, parasites and poor nutrition.

Last year, beekeepers in the United States lost an estimated 40 percent of their managed honeybee colonies, so many commercial agricultural operations around the United States are considering pollination with alternative bee species now that the honeybee is beset by problems.

NEWS FROM THE FARM

flooding

The rain and thunderstorms reported last week and through this week led to flooding in our fields (pictured, right).  So now in addition to our normal work we have to clean up and replant where possible. These events are very stressful as we nurture these plants and when we see this destruction it is like losing family.

Questions from CSA members:

I have a question for the farm: what produce is hardest to transport?

This question is dependent on the mix of vegetables we want to transport. If we are trying to transport summer and winter crops together this is where it gets hard as things like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are best transported at 45- 55 while things like lettuce is best transported at 33 degrees. There are also items that get bruised or broken such as heirloom tomatoes and little baby flower watermelons due to the truck bouncing down the road from farm to CSA site. Our refrigerated truck can only be set at one temperature so we often have to compromise on temps to suit all transported vegetables.

We also had a question about the verities of basil we include in the CSA.

They all can be used as traditional Genovese basil can be used. The purple basil for example was used in a tomato salad recently featured at Gramercy Tavern for one of their market lunches. If you have more questions like this I will try to get answers from some of our chef customers. Keep the questions coming….

(Editor's note: if you have any questions for Zaid and the team, email us at info@washingtonquarecsa.com and we'll share them!)

NEWS FROM THE FARM

lettuce

We are holding in a summer pattern more resembling what we used to see when we first moved here. Threats of thunderstorms every day and warm humid days and nights.

Weekly Dr. Michael Mazourek and his staff visit our farm to check in on experiments going on at the farm. We are growing cucumbers with the hope that we will bread a tasty cucumber that can withstand the fall assault from downy mildew which is usually a sure sign of the death of cucumber plants. Next week we have a production crew that will film on farm to promote some of the breeding work done.

We would like to entertain questions from CSA members that we can answer in our future newsletters. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

NEWS FROM THE FARM

kale

The rain continues and we are in a more traditional pattern of almost daily thunderstorms, humidity, and variably cloudy weather with highs mostly in 70 and low 80s. This is a far cry from the 90s and high humidity of a few week ago.

The cooler weather early in the season and the coolish weather now plus our new rented farm combined to give you some very nice broccoli and cauliflower. The crew on the farm continues to work very hard as we are still in a plant, weed, harvest, and pack for CSAs and market mode. Soon we will be doing less planting and weeding which will give the guys a break. In about 3 weeks Eid Ul Adha will be upon us and all are looking forward to that.Your comments and suggestions are welcome.
